João Mário, Sport Lisboa e Benfica's athlete, was elected the Best Midfielder of the Month of the Liga Bwin 2022/23 in December/January. The Portuguese international got 28.57% of the votes of the competition's head coaches.

A starter in all six games played in this period of the competition, João Mário scored four goals - one against Portimonense, another against Paços de Ferreira and two against Arouca.

The Benfica midfielder João Mário beat Samu (Vizela) and Otávio (FC Porto), who gathered 11.9% and 9.52% of the preferences, respectively.
