Wines from the Alentejo Region

The history of wine and vines in the territory that is now the Alentejo requires a long narrative, with a continuous presence in time and space, an uninterrupted and fruitful gesture that few associate with the Alentejo. A history that has been immersed in tumultuous plots, divided between periods of bonanza and prosperity, interspersed by times of cataclysm and tribulation, in a permanent fluctuation of wills, with long periods of darkness followed by brief illuminating and avant-garde cycles.

A little bit of history

Alentejo

Alentejo given back to the Portuguese

The Alentejo asserts itself as one of the most vibrant wine-producing regions

It is not certain when, or by whom, wine and vine culture began in the Alentejo. What is certain is that it was a long, long time ago. Portugal, it should not be forgotten, is part of the Old World and has had many peoples and religions as tenants - or landlords, depending on the point of view.

Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Christians - all will have spent some evenings warmed up by Alentejo wine. Well, almost all, insofar as the Arabs at some point in their occupation of this territory ended up censoring its consumption - here is a real sin.

Fortunately for us wine lovers, history eventually saw the Alentejo returned to the Portuguese - and wine returned to the Alentejo. Today, after centuries of ups and downs, the Alentejo asserts itself as one of the most vibrant wine-producing regions in Portugal, and has been multiplying in quantity and reinventing itself in quality. Proof of this is the fact that almost half the wine consumed in Portugal is Alentejo wine.
