Greek-Roman wrestling was the first style to be practiced. On July 24, 1919, Cândido de Oliveira, in the middleweight category (71 kilograms), and Agostinho dos Santos, in the lightweight category (60 kilograms and 750 grams), participated in the National Greek-Roman Wrestling Championship. The two Benfica athletes had an excellent performance and became champions in their respective categories. On July 3, 1988, the Club won its first collective trophy by winning the Portuguese Cup.
In 1977, the "red-blacks" started practicing freestyle wrestling and, just over a decade later, became national champions and won the Portuguese Cup in 1989. In the first half of the 1990s, Benfica's athletes stood out by winning the National Championship consecutively between 1991 and 1993.
In 2013, the return of Olympic wrestling at Benfica brought the inclusion of women's wrestling as a novelty. In the debut year, the Benfica female wrestlers gave reasons to celebrate by winning the Norberto Rodrigues Tournament and the Federation Cup.
