Captian of Benfica's professional football team, Otamendi has been called up by the Argentine national team, which will play two friendly matches against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in October.

Qualified for the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine team will face Venezuela on October 11 (Saturday, 1:00 am mainland Portugal time) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Also in the United States, the world champions will play another friendly match against Puerto Rico at Soldier Field in Chicago. This match is scheduled for midnight mainland Portugal time on October 14 (Tuesday).

Tribute to the captain in the dressing room

Otamendi, captain of Benfica, reached the milestone of 250 official games wearing the eagle on his chest in the match against Tondela (3-0) – in which he scored the first goal – on Wednesday, October 29, at Estádio da Luz, counting towards the quarterfinals of the League Cup. The world champion center back was honored in the dressing room by his teammates, coach José Mourinho, and President Rui Costa.

Benfica-Tondela: extended match highlights

Benfica made a winning start to the 2025/26 League Cup.  Playing at home in front of 50,314 fans on Wednesday night (October 29), the Eagles beat Tondela 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the competition, advancing to the final four, where they will face SC Braga in early January 2026. At Estádio da Luz, Otamendi was the first to score: in the 41st minute, the captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot, shining in his 250th game wearing the eagle on his chest. Lukebakio (83') and Pavlidis (90'+5') scored the other goals for the Reds, sealing the victory.

Martim's dream came true

The lights at Estádio da Luz were already shining beyond the final whistle, but for Martim, a young goalkeeper from Aveiro, aged just 12, the game was not over yet. After Benfica-Arouca (5-0), from Matchday 9 of the Liga Betclic, the Benfica fan experienced his own magical moment. Amid hugs, shy words, and admiring glances, he met the players and coach of the first team, took photos, and received a jersey from one of his idols, Trubin. It was the Benfica Foundation and the Club's Professional Football that opened the doors to this unforgettable encounter – and Martim left with his heart overflowing.
