Rodrigo Rêgo, 20, made his debut for Benfica's first team in the victory over Atlético (0-2) in the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup and was voted Man of the Match by the fans.

In statements made during quick interviews with RTP Notícias and Sport TV, the Eagles' number 67 showed his pride.

I am very happy to have made my debut for Sport Lisboa e Benfica. It is the club that has always given me everything, always helped me to develop as a person and as an athlete. I am very happy to have made my debut,” he said.

Rodrigo Rêgo highlighted what José Mourinho told him before the match.

“I found out a few days ago that I would be part of the squad. The coach told me to do what I always do when I train with them, and that's what I tried to do. The coach helped me a lot to stay calm for the game and gave me the confidence to play well,” he said.

Regarding the challenge against Atlético, the young left-footed player emphasized the importance of Benfica remaining in the Portuguese Cup.

I'm pleased to be through to the next round. We didn't start in the best way, it's true, but in the second half we managed to win the game,” he said.

When asked which area of the pitch he felt most comfortable in, the first half (on the left) or the second half (on the right), Rodrigo Rêgo showed total commitment to the team: “I like playing in both positions. Whatever the team needs, I'm available to play in any position.

After completing 90 minutes wearing the eagle on his chest, the youngster believes that tonight's performance could be repeated in the future. "Without a doubt. I think it's every kid's dream to play for Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and I'm very happy about my debut. I hope to play more minutes for Sport Lisboa e Benfica,“ he said, adding that ”the most important thing now is to recover and think about the next game."

When asked if he had earned a different place in the team, Rodrigo Rêgo assured that he will continue to work hard: “Those are the coach's decisions, I'm here to help.”
