Sport Lisboa e Benfica announces that Lourenço Coelho will step down as General Director for Football at the end of this week.

The Club would like to thank Lourenço Coelho for all his professionalism, dedication, and competence in the service of Benfica over the past 21 years, having served as General Director on and off for seven years, during which time Benfica won five championships.

For this new cycle, Sport Lisboa e Benfica announces that Mário Branco will be the new General Director for Football, formally taking up his duties on July 14, when the first team returns to work.

Mário Branco has large experience in international football, with a deep knowledge of Portuguese football and a proven track record in several European championships.

The Club wishes Lourenço Coelho and Mário Branco – who have been planning the new season together over the past few weeks – the best of luck in this new stage of their professional lives.

Trained at Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Renato Sanches returned home in August 2024, on a one-year loan from PSG. Throughout the 2024/25 season, the midfielder made in Benfica played in 21 games and scored 1 goal, making a significant contribution to the club's 8th League Cup victory. SL Benfica wishes Renato Sanches all the best. Benfica fought until the end for a different outcome in the last 16 of the Club World Cup, but after extra time they fell to Chelsea (1-4), thus ending their journey in the first edition of the competition in the United States of America. In a game that was interrupted in the 86th minute due to the threat of a thunderstorm and ended almost five hours after the kick-off, Di María leveled the score at 90'+5' (1-1), taking the match into 30 minutes of extra time, during which time the result hung in the balance for the English at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
