In the early hours of Wednesday, September 10, Richard Ríos and Otamendi, players of Benfica's professional football team, competed for their respective national teams in the final round (18th) of CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, a competition for which both nations had already qualified.

With Richard Ríos playing the full game, Colombia beat Venezuela 3-6 at the Estadio Monumental de Maturin. In an offensive move, the Eagles midfielder drove the ball from midfield to the box, exchanged passes with a teammate, and, leaning to the left, sent in a low and tense cross (assist) for the Cafeteros' fifth goal in the 67th minute. With this result, the Colombian team finished in 3rd place in the South American group with 28 points.

Argentina, which had already secured 1st place (38 points), lost to Ecuador 1-0 at the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero. Otamendi started the game and received a red card in the 31st minute.
