ECO Benfica’s pioneering initiative has been a success in sports events both at Estádio da Luz and Pavilions.

Benfica reusable cups
The balance of the project so far is "frankly good". Who evaluates it is Olívia Alves, Environment Specialist of Benfica, in statements given to the Club's media.
"We were afraid to take that step, especially because of people, afraid they could not understand or create some resistance, but, fortunately, it was the contrary. We noticed a lot of participation, curiosity and interest, and that’s really good. From the fans, we only have positive feedback", she revealed.
With this initiative, it was possible to "eliminate the consumption of about 20 thousand single-use plastic cups per game", a large reduction of waste in the Stadium and Fan Zone, allowing a better allocation of human resources, water and energy expended on cleaning the Complex. The bet on reusable cups also favors the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
"The fans can come, buy and return the cup wherever they want, and if not, take it home. Easier than that would be impossible"
Olívia Alves
One of the novelties for 2023/24 is that "all points of sale also retake the cups", that is, "when it comes to this process, which could be a little more uncomfortable at time, there is no obstacle". "The fans can come, buy and return the cup wherever they want, and if not, take it home. Easier than that would be impossible", added the Environment Specialist.
Another surprise reserved will the new cups available: "We will have new cups throughout the season, we have some special editions prepared, because this year we have some important commemorative dates of the Club. We want to follow it, therefore, the ideia is to let people curious."
Listen to Olívia Alves
Olívia Alves also stated that the goals of the initiative for this year are to "try to extend the use of these reusable cups to all kind of events in everyday life", as well as to "try to eliminate all single-use plastic", while acknowledging that it will not be possible to achieve 100%.
Benfica was the first Portuguese club to put this project into practice and the Environment Specialist considers that this innovation, "is a source of pride" for Benfica, and should be a model to follow.
"These issues are transversal to society and what is intended is that we can be an example somehow, but also share information so that other clubs can do it too", praised Olívia Alves.
