Fernando Pimenta with the gold medal
The Benfica canoeist completed the course with a time of 21:50.83 minutes and was ahead of Denmark's Thorbjorn Rask (22:12.51 minutes) and Sweden's Joakim Lindberg (22:14.04 minutes), who completed the podium. Benfica's João Ribeiro was also entered in this final, but didn't start.
This was the third medal won in the competition by Fernando Pimenta, who had already won bronze in K1 1000 meters on Sunday morning (12th) and silver in K2 mixed 500 meters, paired with fellow Benfica athlete Teresa Portela, on Saturday (11th).
Also on Sunday, May 12, Messias Baptista contributed to the brilliant performance of Benfica's canoeists in Hungary by winning the bronze medal in K1 200 meters, with a time of 34.74 seconds.
A day earlier, on Saturday 11 May, Messias Baptista had already been in the spotlight alongside João Ribeiro in the K2 500 metres, where the pair won silver with a time of 1:27.09 minutes.
